Walker Evans Study

Description: In this monochrome photograph, an apartment complex is shown where there are many windows lined up beside each other. Also, the left half of the apartment complex seems slightly more elevated than the right half. A majority of the windows on the right half seem to be closed and most of the windows on the left half seem to be somewhat open.

Formal Analysis: The pattern of the windows lined up beside each other creates texture from the repetition. Also, the form of the windows create balance. There is form created from the noticeable shadows of each window, creating a pattern. The left half of the photo also seems to be disproportional compared to the right half, slightly disrupting the balance of the photo.

Reflection: The photographer captured a photo of this apartment complex representing the boring, repetitive life that the regular working person would live in a city like New York. All the windows look identical symbolizing that the people in each of these rooms live the same type of lives, day and night.
